Hugh B. Hester papers, 1945-1977.

Abstract Much of the collection concerns the Vietnam War, such as peace movements and demonstrations, the Gulf of Tonkin resolution, Selective Service, the abolition of ROTC, and a volunteer Army. Correspondents include I. F. Stone; Paul McCloskey, who discusses the Lon Nol regime and the Khmer Rouge; Adlai Stevenson, who wrote concerning the military budget; Barbara Tuchman; Sam Ervin, Jr.; and George McGovern. Other topics include the 1972 presidential election and Watergate. Editorial correspondence, clippings, and publications concern United States foreign policy since World War I, including international relations between the world powers; the United Nations; the position of NATO in supporting West German rearmament after World War II; and the activities of John Foster Dulles, Konrad Adenauer, and others during the development of the Cold War.

Biographical noteHugh Bryan Hester (1895-1983), a native of Hester, N.C., served as a 2nd lieutenant in the artillery during World War I. For his war service, he received the Silver Star, the Croix de Guerre, and the French Legion of Honor. A career officer, he served in the Pacific Theater under General Douglas MacArthur during World War II, was director of the United States Food and Agriculture Program in Germany, and became military attache to Australia. Hester served as commanding general of the Philadelphia Quartermaster Depot until his retirement as a brigadier general. An outspoken opponent of United States foreign policy, Hester was a special correspondent for "The Nation, The Churchman," and "U.S. Farm News," as well as a speaker on the lecture circuit.
